Nurturing Your Creative Flow: Beyond the 365 Project
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, the air carries the promise of possibilities, beckoning photographers to define goals, seek inspiration, and chart the course for the journey ahead. While the prospect of new beginnings sounds exciting, the commencement of something new, be it a year or a chapter, can also usher in feelings of anxiety and stress. Committing to significant projects often brings structure that, ironically, can feel suffocating. Having embarked on 365 projects in previous years, I too faced moments of initial zeal followed by a rapid loss of momentum. This perplexed me for a while, and I questioned my focus. But deep down, I knew there was more to the story.
In this blog post, I aim to share lessons learned over the years, providing insights to prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by unaccomplished photography (and life) goals that end up tucked away, unseen. How do you maintain motivation and find joy in your art throughout an entire year? I'll share some tools that work for me.
Transformative Power of the Mind: Clara Schumann's Influence
Consider the inspiring story of Clara Schumann, a gifted pianist who not only enriched her creative journey but also played a pivotal role in unlocking her husband Robert Schumann's creative potential. His most innovative phase began after Clara encouraged him to reach beyond the confines of piano compositions.
Before his marriage, Schumann had concentrated exclusively on composing songs and piano works. We can thank Clara for encouraging her husband to try his hand at larger-scale forms such as symphonies, oratorios, and concertos. In a letter dated January 7, 1839, Clara wrote, “Don’t take it amiss if I tell you that I’ve been seized by the desire to encourage you to write for orchestra. Your imagination and your spirit are too great for the weak piano.”
With Clara’s support, Schumann entered one of the most creative periods of his life after their marriage. For five years, he produced large-scale masterwork after large-scale masterwork, including the “Spring” Symphony; the Overture, Scherzo, and Finale; the oratorio Paradise and the Peri; the three String Quartets, Op. 41; and the E-flat Piano Quartet and Quintet. ~ John Mangum, LA Phil
The impact of a few words from Clara speaks volumes about the potential influence of our own self-talk. In a world demanding more, we often forget the importance of self-love and kindness. Navigating my artistic path, I discovered the significance of cultivating a calm and balanced mind through meditation, yoga, and mindful journaling.
Daily Meditation: A Gateway to Balance
My daily meditation practice begins most mornings with a 10-minute session in my bedroom. Whether starting on my bed or transitioning to seated meditation, apps like Headspace offer guided meditations that prove invaluable. A few moments of stillness provide respite from the ongoing mental chatter. Post-meditation, I feel calm, centered, and ready to tackle the day. Beyond immediate effects, it reshapes my long-term perspective on life, relationships, personal happiness, and self-perception.
Yoga for Physical and Emotional Well-being
Yoga forms another integral part of my routine, not just for physical well-being but as a strategy to connect with my mind and understand my emotional state. The practice enhances my ability to channel emotions authentically into my photography, bringing a raw and honest quality to my work.
Journaling: Unveiling the Real Self
Lastly, I sit down to jot a few thoughts into my journal. By this point, I've gained a clear understanding of my feelings and priorities, lifting a veil from my mind and connecting with my authentic self. These steps allow me to approach photography with a similar raw and honest perspective, channeling my emotions into my work after truly understanding them.
In previous years, I sought accountability through 365 projects, but the rigidity left me burnt out. A frame and a connection to my work became essential. My journey led me to the ocean, where nature, rhythmic waves, and environmental concerns converged. This connection, coupled with being in a place I love, not only inspires but also deepens my connection to my subject, resulting in art that holds personal meaning.
Inspired by a New York Times article, I stumbled upon a delight practice that aligns seamlessly with my photography: acknowledging "Moments of Delight." This year, I invite you to join our Develop with Light community and embrace the "Moments of Delight" challenge. Let's revel in the beauty of the everyday, finding inspiration without the pressure of a 365 project.
