My Creative Photo Community Project

Welcome, fellow photography enthusiasts, to the Develop with Light Project!

This project is based on the idea that, just as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a community to grow as a creative photographer. Based on monthly topics, you are invited to inspire, be inspired and explore new photography territory. In creating, sharing and engaging with photographers from all walks of life, you will not only grow as a photographer, but also make new friends and become more focused on underlying themes in your work. 

01. WHY:

After years of fine-tuning my own craft as a creative photographer, I’ve come to the conclusion that the most important stepping stones in my career were mentors, role models and a community of inspiring photographers. This photography project is dedicated to building a photography community where you get inspired and inspire others in equal parts.

The Develop with Light Project is here for you when you feel uninspired, fearful or not sure about the direction you’re going with your images, but also when you want to share a success or just celebrate feel good work. 

02. HOW:

Let’s explore one creative technique each month in 2023 and improve our skills as light catchers. 

Each month a new topic will be introduced. Beginning with basic principles like the impact of light and selective focus we will move on to the role of your mood, colors and lens choice. Towards the end of the year we will work on creative techniques and finally finish off in December by putting it all together. 

You can either find each month’s topic over on Instagram under @californialover in my story highlights or by joining my Facebook group. After familiarizing yourself with the theme of the month it’s time to apply the things you’ve learned to your photography. Sometimes you will learn new skills, other times you might be familiar with the topic but feel inspired to try a known skill in a new way. Together we will work on this theme for the next 30 days. A month is an ideal timeframe to explore one topic from many different angles and make it your own.

03. WHAT YOU’LL GET:

No matter what camera you own or how much you know about photography, this project offers you a nurturing community and a place to grow. 

Each month I will critique one image that was produced in this group and stands out in some way. On my blog I will highlight 10 images each month that demonstrate outstanding performance of our monthly topic. I will also highlight some of your work on my Instagram stories. 

At the end of the year or however long you decide to participate I guarantee you will be impressed by the growth in your photography skills.
