The Magic of Prism Photography: Tips and Techniques for Creative Images

In 2019, I purchased my first prism and began experimenting with light and subjects in my photography. Little did I know that this would be a game-changing addition to my skillset. Initially, my attempts were less than impressive, and I found the process to be challenging and frustrating. However, a few months later, I had the opportunity to beta-test Lensbaby's OMNI filters, which reignited my interest in reflection and refraction techniques. (Click here to read more about Lensbaby Omni Filters). Through practice and experimentation, I finally gained a better understanding of this fascinating technique, which helped me become a more skilled photographer.

Today, I want to share some tips and tricks for prism photography that I've learned along the way. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer, there's always something new to explore and discover with this mesmerizing method. But now it is time to talk about prism photography!

Prism photography is a technique that involves using a prism to manipulate light and create unique and creative images. By holding a prism in front of the camera lens, photographers can reflect and refract light in new and interesting ways, resulting in images with vibrant colors, interesting patterns, and a sense of depth.

After weeks of experimenting with prism photography, I finally captured this image that left me completely hooked. Taken with the Lensbaby Multicolor Crystal in September, 2019.

Tips to help you get started with prism photography:

1. Choose the right prism

There are many types of prisms available, each with their own unique properties. Some prisms, for example, are designed to split light into a spectrum of colors, while others create more abstract patterns and shapes. When choosing a prism, consider the effect you want to achieve and experiment with different types to find the right one for your needs. Although I own and cherish various prisms, my heart belongs to the Lensbaby Omni filters which are an excellent option for anyone who is new to prism photography. They are lightweight, portable, and compatible with any lens, making them a versatile choice.

2. Experiment with angles

The angle at which you hold the prism can have a big impact on the final image. By moving the prism closer or farther away from the lens, or by tilting it at different angles, you can create different patterns and effects. Try experimenting with different angles and positions to see how they affect the final image.

3. Play with light sources

Prism photography is all about manipulating light, so it's important to consider the light sources in your scene. Sunlight, for example, can create vibrant colors and sharp patterns, while indoor lighting can produce more subtle effects. Experiment with different light sources to see how they interact with the prism and create different effects.

4. Use a tripod or the Lensbaby OMNI Creative Filter system

When shooting with a prism, it can be difficult to hold both the prism and the camera steady.

Using a tripod can help to stabilize your shot and ensure that your images are sharp and in focus. I personally love Lensbaby’s step-up/step down rings that allow me to mount the OMNI creative Filter System on a range of different sized lenses.

Prism photography is a great way to experiment with composition and create unique and interesting images. Shooting through a prism is a very playful approach and allows different angles to create unusual shapes and patterns. It definitely helps you frame your subject in a new and creative way.

5. Post-processing

Once you have captured your images, post-processing can help to enhance the final effect. Adjusting the exposure, contrast, and color saturation can help to bring out the vibrant colors and patterns created by the prism. Experiment with different settings to find the look that works best for your image.

Some examples of how prism photography can be used in different types of photography:

Prism photography is a fun and creative technique that can add a new dimension to your photography. Whether you're looking to create abstract patterns and shapes or add a new twist to your portraits or landscapes, a prism can help you achieve the look you want.

Portrait photography

Using a prism in portrait photography can create a unique and creative effect. By holding the prism in front of the lens, you can create a reflection of your subject that adds depth and interest to the image. Experiment with different angles and positions to create a variety of effects.

Adding light leaks and streaks, as seen in this portrait, can introduce an intriguing element and transform an ordinary headshot into a visually captivating masterpiece.

Landscape photography

Prism photography can also be used in landscape photography to create a sense of depth and add interest to the scene. By reflecting the light and manipulating the colors, you can create a unique and otherworldly effect that sets your image apart.

Consider how unremarkable this picture would appear without the captivating light sparkles produced by a prism.

Still life photography

In still life photography, a prism can be used to create interesting patterns and shapes that add visual interest to your image. By reflecting and refracting the light, you can create a sense of movement and add depth to the scene.

By incorporating reflected light into this scene, I was able to infuse a magical quality into the image, enhancing its overall impact.

A few things to keep in mind:

One thing to keep in mind when using prisms is that they can create some unwanted reflections and glare. To avoid this, try to position the prism in a way that minimizes the amount of light reflecting off its surface. You can also use a lens hood or a piece of cardboard to shield the lens from stray light.

Another thing to consider is the size and shape of the prism. Some photographers prefer smaller prisms that can be held closer to the lens, while others prefer larger prisms that can be used to create more dramatic effects. Ultimately, the size and shape of the prism will depend on your personal preferences and the types of images you want to create.

In conclusion, prism photography is a fun and creative technique that can help you add a new dimension to your photography. Whether you're shooting portraits, landscapes, or still life images, a prism can help you create unique and interesting effects that will set your work apart. With a little experimentation and practice, you can start using prisms to create stunning and original images that showcase your creativity and skill as a photographer.

Don't be afraid to try new things and see what works best for your style and subject matter.
